Manual Thematic Analysis
Identifying and analysing the themes and patterns in the collected qualitative data is known as Thematic Analysis which can be done manually as well.
Sample Of Manual Thematic Data Analysis
Given below is a sample as well as a guide of how a manual thematic analysis is carried forward. In order to learn more about the process and steps of the data analysis through this approach and how the team of Academic Research conducts this analysis, we suggest you go through this 24 pages long sample document.
The sample above has been divided into five sections.
- Qualitative Analysis: In the first section, a brief introduction about data analysis, then qualitative analysis, and lastly, the two approaches of qualitative analysis (deductive and inductive) are explained. Along with this brief description of Qualitative analysis, the final paragraph discusses the manual thematic analysis method to provide a transitional flow between the segments.
- Initial Phase: In the initial stage, the first step of thematic analysis; i.e., coding has been talked about. Through this coding, major keywords and categories are concluded from the data collected. Through reading and going through the collected data such as interview transcripts, common themes are selected as major coding frameworks or overall themes included in the data.
- Second Stage: The second stage includes a detailed reading and comprehension of the data to provide further points under the 24 major themes noted down in the stage one. To keep the themes informative, a detailed coding framework for the broader themes is provided and these derived additional points are also considered as the informative tools. These sub-themes become the keys to answer the research questions in the later sections of the research.
- Third stage: The third stage is the most crucial as it includes selecting extracts from the data collected as per the themes and sub-themes outlined. Then these extracts are analysed in regards to the research question and the literature studied before producing the final report of analysis.
- References: After the final analysis, the references and resources need to be cited as per the suggested citation style. In the given manual thematic analysis sample, the number of references used is nine and APA citation style is used to cite resources.
This is the brief description about the sample provided along with the inclusions and step-by-step procedure included in each section.
